Reflecting on the First Year of Running Fibrex Nurseries
As we wrap up our first year of running Fibrex Nurseries since taking over in September 2023, it's a fitting time to reflect on the journey so far. Establishing ourselves within the green industry has been an enriching experience, filled with challenges and triumphs that have shaped the future of our business.
Setting up the company proved to be a more intricate task than anticipated. From constructing growing benches to ensuring our greenhouses and heating were winter-ready, the initial phases demanded dedication and resourcefulness. With the invaluable assistance of Ursula and Angela, the previous owners who continued to support us during the winter, we navigated through this critical period with confidence.
Transitioning the plant nursery to operate on a solar power source posed one of our earliest and most stressful hurdles. Despite the uncertainties, we persevered, learning and growing from every obstacle we encountered along the way. Another one of many challenges was the continuous wet weather through the winter, leading to high humidity. The excessive moisture resulted in some casualties to our Regal collection and lots of sleepless nights! With the combination of some warmer summer days, focusing on creating more effective air circulation and the introduction of growing lights we made it through the summer with some great growth. You really do learn something new every season.
The unconditional support from our customers, family and friends throughout the spring was a constant source of motivation. The decision for my partner Laura to join me in running the company was a pivotal moment, as our partnership has proven to be a harmonious blend of skills and dedication.
Challenges such as low light levels during the growing season and the subsequent impact on plant quality tested our resolve. However, the overwhelming support and positive feedback from our loyal customers fortified our belief in the vision we had set for Fibrex Nurseries.
Our venture into supplying Burford Garden Company yielded fruitful results, laying the foundation for future collaborations with trade customers. Improving our efficiency in picking and packing orders emerged as a priority, and we are currently focused on optimising this process to allow us to spend more time with our head in Pelargoniums, as opposed to packaging!
Exploring peat-free alternatives in late spring marked a significant milestone, with promising results from trials conducted with various products. We are excited to launch a peat-free range in 2025, aligning with our commitment to sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, our sights are set on expanding our presence in plant sales across the country, starting with weekend engagements and working towards participating in major shows by 2026. The challenges we faced in our inaugural year have strengthened our resolve, positioning us for continued growth and success in the years to come.
As we reflect on the trials and triumphs of our first year at Fibrex Nurseries, we are grateful for the journey so far and excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our success, and we look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you. Thank you for being part of our story.
