When most people think of Mothering Sunday, they imagine cards, flowers, and breakfast in bed. But here at Fibrex Nurseries, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the real stars of the show – our mother plants.
These are the unsung heroines behind every pelargonium that arrives on your doorstep. With over 1,400 varieties in our collection, we rely on our loyal mother plants to provide every single cutting we grow – and that’s a lot of cuttings!
🌱 What Is a Mother Plant?
A mother plant is a healthy, mature specimen that we grow specifically for propagation. From her, we take cuttings that are rooted and raised into the beautiful young plants we send to customers across the UK and beyond.
At Fibrex, we don’t buy in any stock. Every plant you receive from us is grown from our own hands, under our own glass, and from our own carefully nurtured mother plants. That means consistency, quality, and character – the hallmarks of what we do.
✂️ Working Them Hard – With Love
Our mother plants are worked hard. Throughout the growing season, they’re regularly in the salon seat, as we harvest fresh cuttings to keep up with demand. And with thousands of orders going out each year, these mums are busy!
But like any hard-working mother, they need a break eventually. That’s why we retire our mother plants every 3 years – by then, they've given us their best, and they start to get tired. They're replaced with strong new plants grown from – you guessed it – their own cuttings, keeping the cycle going.

Using our own mother plants means we know exactly what we’re growing, and that your plants are true to type. It also helps us preserve and pass on rare and heritage varieties that you won’t find in garden centres or mass-market suppliers.
There’s a lot of love, time, and skill that goes into this process – and we think it’s something worth celebrating.
